Research Lab for Musical Iconography, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (R.L.M.I.-AUTh).

Musical Iconography is a branch of Historical Musicology, which utilizes information deriving from the depiction of music, dance and the theater in art to study musical instruments, performance techniques, music environments, musicians and their status in the cultural environment that produced them.

Research Lab of Musical Iconography, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (R.L.M.I.-AUTh) was founded in 2016. It succeeded the Archive of Musical Iconography and Literary Sources that operated in the School of Music Studies AUTh since 1996.

R.L.M.I.-AUTh operates for the promotion of following scientific fields:

  • Musical Iconography
  • Historical Musicology
  • Ethnomusicology
  • Music Education
  • Musical Acoustics and Informatics
  • Esthetics / Philosophy of Music
  • Music performance and interpretation
  • Composition

Its main goals are:

  1. To fulfill educational, research and artistic requirements in the areas of Historical Musicology and Music Education in the School of Music Studies of the Faculty of Fine Arts AUTh and other academic institutions working on the field of Humanities in Greece and abroad,
  2. To conduct original research on the field of Musical Iconography through the collection, documentation and cataloguing of iconographic material in the digital database MITOS and the implementation of research projects in specific subjects of Musical Iconography.
  3. To cooperate with research centers in Greece and abroad aiming at the exchange of material, the implementation of research projects, lectures, conferences and seminars with musical iconographical subject matter
  4. To issue scientific publications and educational material for specialized and the wider audiences, as well as provide the Lab’s website with rich informative material
  5. To cooperate with the School of Music Studies and other cultural institutions in Greece and abroad for the promotion of music related subjects by creatively using images for the overall promotion of Greek culture
  6. To establish communication with different sectors of local society to promote and economically finance innovative cultural actions
